7 website mistakes that cost you solar customers every day

SolarSales ProFebruary 4, 20266 min read

Your website is often the first contact a prospect has with your company. In a few seconds, they form an opinion. And in most cases, that opinion is negative — not because your company isn't good, but because your site makes mistakes that erode trust and discourage action.

Here are the 7 most common mistakes we see on solar installers' websites, and how to fix them to convert far more visitors into customers.

1. Slow load times

53% of mobile visitors leave a site that takes more than 3 seconds to load. In solar, many sites are overloaded with high-res panel photos, autoplay videos, and third-party scripts that slow everything down. Every extra second of load time cuts your conversion rate by about 7%.

The fix: compress your images to WebP, defer non-essential scripts, and use fast hosting. Test your site on Google PageSpeed Insights and aim for a score above 80 on mobile.

2. No clear call to action above the fold

The fold is what a visitor sees without scrolling. If that area holds nothing but a panel photo and a vague slogan like "Your trusted solar partner," you lose their attention. The visitor doesn't know what to do next.

Put a visible, engaging call to action right at the top: a production calculator, an "Estimate my savings" button, or a short form. The visitor should understand in under 5 seconds what they can get on your site.

3. A contact form that scares people off

The more information your form asks for, the less it gets filled out. First name, last name, email, phone, address, roof type, square footage, energy usage, budget, message — ask for all of that at once and your submission rate will be close to zero.

  • Limit the initial form to 3–4 fields max
  • Use a progressive format (one question at a time)
  • Give something back (a savings estimate or a guide)
  • Save the detailed questions for the phone call

4. No visible social proof

No reviews, no testimonials, no numbers. Your site claims you're an "expert with 10 years of experience" but nothing backs it up. Visitors are skeptical by default. Without social proof, they won't trust you enough to leave their contact details.

Add your Google reviews, show your Trustpilot rating, display testimonials with a photo and a specific result, and add a counter of completed installs. These elements should be visible on the homepage, not buried on a subpage.

5. A site that isn't mobile-optimized

In 2026, more than 65% of web traffic comes from smartphones. If your site isn't perfectly responsive — text too small, buttons impossible to tap, broken layout — you lose two-thirds of your potential visitors. That's true of most installer sites built more than 3 years ago.

Test your site on your own phone. If you have to zoom in to read or struggle to tap a button, your prospects have the same problem. And they won't make the effort — they leave.

6. No educational content

Your prospects have questions: how much does it cost, is it worth it, what incentives exist, how long does installation take, does it work in winter? If your site doesn't answer these, they'll go find the answers elsewhere — and that's exactly where they'll end up requesting a quote.

Create content that answers your prospects' common questions. A blog, a detailed FAQ, practical guides. This content improves your Google ranking AND positions your company as a trusted authority.

7. No visitor tracking

Most installers have no idea what's happening on their site. How many visitors a month? Where do they come from? Which page do they leave on? Without this data, you can't improve your conversion. You're flying blind.

  • Install Google Analytics or an equivalent tool
  • Track visitor count, bounce rate, and most-viewed pages
  • Identify the pages where visitors leave (the "exit points")
  • Use a connected CRM to track leads from first click to close

Your site doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to stop driving away the prospects who are already interested. Fix these 7 mistakes and you'll see the difference within the first month.
